Choosing Cutterhead Sizepad
Your strip cutter will be delivered to you with the cutterhead size of your choice. Though you may purchase other cutterheads, the one you decide upon for the initial purchase depends upon your type of rug hooking.

Cutterheads are numbered by the width of strips they produce, in 32nds of an inch: a #8 cuts strips 8/32" (1/4") in width.

If you are primarily interested in the original primitive style of rug hooking, sizes #6 through #8 are a good choice. If you are getting the cutter with only the single cutterhead, we suggest a #6. To increase the versatility of your machine, order it with a #6 installed, plus one extra blade, a #8.

If you prefer a more modern style of rug hooking known as fine shading, where wool strips are employed much as tiny strokes in a painting, then you might want to begin with a #4, with a #3 as the second choice.

If you need a cutter to produce strips of wool for rug braiding, up to 2" wide, then a #1 blade for the Fraser 500-1 only would be the choice.

padAdjusting Your Cutterpad
The secret to long blade life is correct cutterhead pressure. When you receive a cutter from us, it will be properly adjusted. After you change a cutterhead, follow these precedures.

With the new cutterhead installed (the engraved number toward the outside), tighten the pressure adjustment screw until you begin to feel pressure. Do not tighten excessively. Using a scrap of wool, make a test cut. If the cutter cuts correctly, back the pressure screw off half a turn, and try again. Continue backing off pressure a little at a time until the cutter no longer cuts cleanly, then tighten the pressure screw half a turn, and test. It should now cut correctly with minimum pressure on the blade.

If the cutter does not cut correctly on the first test, tighten the screw one turn, and test again. Continue until the cutter cuts all the strips cleanly, then back the blade off as described above. The object is to use minimum pressure, yet sufficient to cut cleanly. Excessive pressure will dramatically shorten blade life, as will turning the handle of the cutter when not cutting wool.

Handle your cutter with care. Cutterheads can be permanently damaged by only a few seconds of improper use or adjustment. Make cutterhead adjustments with caution. THERE IS NO WARRANTY ON CUTTERHEADS.

Fraser 500-1 note: The pressure roller should be directly over the cutterhead. If the roller is aligned toward the inside, poor cutting may result. Typically, the cutting blade nearest the center of the roller will cut correctly, while the outer blade will cut poorly or not at all. Always check this before increasing roller pressure if one strip cuts cleanly and the one next to it does not.
